Love, Sick – A Story of Toxic Love.

Happy February! In honor of Valentine’s Day, this month, our episodes are focused on all things LOVE. This includes love that isn’t always good for us. As is the case in the short movie, Love, Sick – A Story of Toxic Love, Written, Produced, & Directed, by the Emmy and Webby award-winning, Christopher Klimovski. I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing ‘Klimovski’ as he prefers to be called, in Vaughan, Ontario, at The Vaughan International Film Festival’s, International Short Filming Screenings where Love, Sick premiered. Have to admit, the film was chilling to the core. And I wouldn’t expect anything less from Klimovski. Have you been through a painful breakup and experienced heartbreak? Or ever missed someone so much that you felt sick? What about a strong sense of yearning for a person who didn’t feel the same way? Then you know that this experience is real and hurts. Love, Sick the movie takes this feeling up a notch. The story centers on two people who want to be together, and simply can’t without destroying each other. But not for the usual, cliché reasons. Klimovski and I chat about what provoked him to make this movie and explore the dark and very toxic side of love. To watch the full episode, be sure to become a Member on our YouTube channel. My Conversation with the late Mark Mendelson, Former CEO of BGU CANADA at Ben-Gurion University Gala

My Conversation with the late Mark Mendelson, Former CEO of BGU CANADA at Ben-Gurion University Gala

This November, I interviewed the late Mark Mendelson, Former CEO of BGU Canada at Ben-Gurion University Toronto’s The Future is Now Gala Featuring Actor Michael J. Fox. Although it was our first-time meeting, Mark’s fundraising in Canada for Israel-based institutions and other successes as a leader in the Jewish Community was evident. Sadly, he suddenly passed away in Montreal at the age of 73 just days after the event. Mark served as the CEO of Ben-Gurion University Canada (formerly the Canadian Associates of Ben-Gurion University) for the past 12 years. Previously, he was executive director of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) for Eastern Canada for 17 years. Known for his signature navy blazer and moustache, his love of family, good food & wine, art, cooking and entertainment, Mark had a larger-than-life personality. His work and devotion to BGU Canada was also apparent - having expanded its presence across Canada and increasing the amount of money raised. Despite the limitations of the pandemic, Mark recently reported to supporters that the organization had had a record financial year. After his military service, Mark ran a delicatessen and popular bagel bakery in Montreal before discovering his true calling - serving the Jewish community. Making BGU, Israel’s youngest university in the developing Negev Desert, better known in Canada became Mark’s true mission. Having appeared on CNN, NBC and more, in our interview, Mark shares how BGU transformed into a dynamic university becoming Israel’s fastest-growing university at the forefront of medical research & development with its Medical Simulation Building, enrolling over 20,000 Jewish, Palestinian & Arab students each year, the impact its research has on Autism, and much more!

Sextortion – The Hidden Pandemic & What It’s Doing to Our Youth

Last month, justice was finally served for Amanda Todd, the Canadian teen who took her life in one of the most high-profile Sextortion cases on record. It was unsealed for the first time in 1091 Pictures global release, timed to Mental Health Awareness Month in the global TVOD/digital release of Auroris Media’s inspirational, fast moving, and timely feature documentary Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic from director, editor & producer Maria Peek, p.g.a. (“I Dream of Dance,” “Third Grade”) and producer & cinematographer Stephen Peek, p.g.a. (“Unacknowledged,” “Renegade”). Amanda’s mother and other victims also speak in this film. In this Janette’s TV & Janette’s TV Podcast episode, Janette sits down with Stephen & Maria Peek to discuss what sextortion is and how it is affecting our youth and how the film merges true crime with an empowering educational opportunity that provides families with essential ways to keep their children safe on the Internet. The filmmakers experienced Sextortion in real time through one of their children’s classmates, and it inspired them to be the change they want to see in the world. With a rapidly moving running time of 85 minutes, you will be engaged and inspired to help save kids around the globe once you watch this documentary. Premiering at this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival as part of the Social Justice Feature Documentaries, and recently through the Spotlight Docs Series (a 501c3 that the filmmakers founded), along with the film came a recently completed sold-out 20+ city educational tour around the U.S. (to audiences of over 5,000 people), where the filmmakers, and Federal agents who ran the landmark case (declassified for first time in this film), have been onsite to experience the emotional and powerful moments—where victims and victims’ families spoke up during the post screening Q&A’s. They have over 200 additional requests across the globe asking for an educational screening series in their cities. The EU Parliament and The Pentagon have begun planning screenings with the filmmakers for later this year and into 2023. The case featured in the film was declassified by (HSI) right before its release, comparable in scope to the case featured in the critically acclaimed “Spotlight.” It’s important to note the difference between human trafficking (cases in the hundreds of thousands), and sextortion (cases in the tens of millions) – as sextortion is 1,000 times more prevalent and is often the precursor to trafficking. 1 in 4 kids are affected or know someone who has been affected by sextortion. Through partnerships with the Department of Justice and Homeland Security, the filmmaking team had unique unrestricted access to all government documents for an international sextortion case of a Top Gun pilot with hundreds of victims, unsealed for this film for the very first time. By interviewing survivors and their parents, this true crime piece exposes this fastest growing crime against children, the tactics of online predators, and the voices of parents and law enforcement poised to stop online child exploitation in its tracks. Through interviews with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), “Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic” shows the scale of online enticement and exploitation of children-- and what we can do to stop it. The filmmakers created an online educational curriculum in partnership with NCMEC, which is available at https://www.missingkids.org/netsmartz. This curriculum is available to educators, parents, federal agents, and police departments, and is age-appropriate for middle and high school students.

Canadian singer, songwriter, composer, and pianist, Chantal Kreviazuk was born in Winnipeg. She played music from a young age before signing with Columbia Records in the 1990s. Her debut studio album, Under These Rocks and Stones, was first released in Canada in 1996 and saw commercial success before being issued in the United States the following year to critical praise. Kreviazuk released two more studio albums with the Columbia la-bel, Colour Moving and Still (1999) and What If It All Means Some-thing (2002), both of which brought moderate commercial success world-wide. She signed with Sony BMG for her fourth album, Ghost Stories (2006), which reached number two on the Canadian Albums Chart. Since 2003, Kreviazuk has co-written and composed numerous songs for other artists as well as film soundtracks and has appeared in several Canadian independent and short films. Her fifth album, Plain Jane, was re-leased by Canadian independent label MapleMusic Recordings in 2009. Her most recent albums, Hard Sail and Get To You, were released by Warner Music Canada in 2016 and 2020, respectively. She also re-leased a Christmas album in 2019, called Christmas Is A Way Of Life, My Dear. From the beginning of her career to 2016, Kreviazuk was the 51st best-selling Canadian artist in Canada. Kreviazuk met Raine Maida, the lead singer of Our Lady Peace, at a Pearl Jam concert in Toronto in 1996. They married in December 1999, and have three sons, born January 2004, June 2005, and June 2008. In honour of their tenth wedding anniversary, Kreviazuk and Maida renewed their wed-ding vows in Costa Rica in November 2009. The family lives in Toronto and also has a home in the USA. Kreviazuk and Maida appeared in the 2019 documentary film I'm Going to Break Your Heart, which detailed both their collaboration on the al-bum Moon vs. Sun, their first album recorded jointly as a duo, and the conflicts and tensions that had arisen in their marriage after 19 years. Kreviazuk is a member of the Canadian charity Artists Against Racism and is also intimately involved with War Child and other charities. Janette caught-up with her on the red carpet at 10th Annual Vaughan International Film Festival (VFF) Gala Awards (where she was the featured entertainer) to talk about her three-time Juno Award winner and collaborations with several other musicians, including Drake, Pitbull, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Kendrick Lamar and Pink, how she sees VFF helping young artists, and what more she’d like to see for Metis & Ukrainian artists.
